In the mid 1990s, the laser was used as a heavy industrial manufacturing tool for the shipbuilding industry. Manufacturing method of large scale ship gradually realize by riveting received welding changes, methods, processes and equipment, welding has been developing steadily, from the earlier gas welding, arc welding, to the development of laser welding.
The continuous development of shipbuilding technology has led to significant changes in shipbuilding materials and ship design. The laser welding of sandwich plates in shipbuilding industry is shown in Figure 1.

Some of the early Japanese shipyard used laser cutting equipment to obtain accurate cutting size and good cutting quality, and benefit from it.
In 1992, Thornycroft Vosper installed the first laser cutting equipment in the European yard. In the middle and late 90s, European yards were installed in a complete set of equipment for welding and cutting. In the United States, the Bender shipyard is the first shipyard to use high power laser cutting equipment.
1999 Bender using Tanaka LMX 6KW III laser, manufacturing costs and quality has made great progress.
In 2001, the federal motor ship Department installed ESAB's 4KW system in its mobile laboratory. The application of laser cutting equipment in Bender has attracted the attention of developing high efficiency laser welding technology. Here are some examples of the application of laser manufacturing technology and system in several European yards.
